Collecting Vintage Playing Cards
Executive Summary about collectible cards by Glyn Farber

Since their initial development, the history or origin of playing cards have been associated with gambling, fortune telling, magic and games. Playing cards appeared in France in the late 1300s and the standard suit symbols used in the United States today, spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs, were first designed by the French. These four suits signs or symbols originally represented the four divisions of society, royalty (spades), clergy (hearts), merchants (diamonds) and peasants (clubs).

Collecting very early vintage playing cards of the 1400 to the late 1800s is out the question for the average collector due to price and availability. However playing cards of the early 1900s and vintage playing used in the last 50 years are not out of the reach of today’s collectors.

To many people, card games are usually linked to gambling. Cards with backs depicting transportation subjects such as airlines and railroads were giveaways or sold as souvenirs. Other souvenir playing cards include views of countries, states and amusement parks.

Decks of playing cards are often miniature works of arts, and the immense diversity of deck designs created over the centuries, offer a collector a never ending source of information and pleasure. You can find vintage playing cards at antique stores and flea markets and eBay.

How To Get Into The Hobby Of Collectible Postcards
Executive Summary about collectible cards by Gregg Hall

One hobby that may be underrated is that of collecting postcards. Collecting postcards, especially vintage postcards or those from another country can be educational, fun, and financially rewarding as well. You will be amazed at some of the places that collectible postcards may be found. One place to find postcards like these is art auctions.

Surfing was really popular during the latter part of this period and one can find a diverse collection of postcards from Hawaii and California featuring surfing.

Personally, I like collecting postcards from all over the world. You can do the same with whatever hobby or interests you may have and collect postcards from countries you visit. Unless one is very well versed and trained in the art of collecting postcards they may have no idea of how valuable the items may be and in the case of buying them at art auctions they are usually not even announced as part of the available items for sale. This is great for you if you are knowledgeable since you will be able to reap the benefits of knowing what the postcards are actually worth and potentially pick up a great collection for pennies on the dollar.

If you want to get into a fun and very educational hobby then collecting postcards may be for you and if you have children they may find it fun as well.
